In the First Peoples course, we learn about the history of First Peoples, and we learn about their stories and culture. It is also very important that we learn about their music and how their culture was passed down. Indigenous identity is also a big part of this course. We read some short stories about identity, and we are also currently watching a movie on identity. We have also done a research project on Indigenous history where students research on a self-guided project. We are then going to analyze a novel about the Indigenous peoples. The English Literature 12 course and the First Peoples 12 course are two different courses, although the English Literature 12 course may have some First Peoples material. For my students, I think that they are appreciating how the Indigenous Peoples has suffered in the residential schools. This course also contains much more oral aspects in this course. I think learning the history and culture of the Indigenous peoples is definitely my favourite part of this course. For this course, I do a lot of the teaching, but students also split into groups to do research and analysis. Occasionally, I also do some quizzes and tests just for students to get an idea of where their strengths and weaknesses are. This course is mandatory for students, but students can take this course through Social Studies or English, but now I see that some students only take this course because they have to.
