What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is a branch of science focusing on the study of the materials that an object is made of, showing the elements and ions in a certain material. Students study how matter is composed throughout grades kindergarten to grade 12. Some different sub-topics for Chemistry is introduced as well, such as Bio-chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Analytic Chemistry. Each of these subtopics can teach about different topics, with some even branching into other fields of science, such as biology and physics.

Chemistry 8

Chemistry 8 is taught as part of the greater science 8 course. Students learn about the Kinetic Molecular Theory, how matter is composed, and what atoms are made of. Protons, neutron, quarks, electrons, and quarks are also major subjects in this course.

Chemistry 9

Students learn about periodic table trends, how elements are organized in the periodic table, elemental families, and compounds. Electrons are also extremely weighted in the Science 9 course, showing how elements are formed and their orbits.

Chemistry 10
The Chemistry 10 course is taught as part of the greater Science 10 course. Some parts of the Chemistry 10 course include: chemical reactions, atom arrangements, acids and bases, reaction rates, and the transformation of energy. Chemistry 10 sets the basis for most of the upcoming Chemistry courses including Chemistry 11 and Chemistry 12.

Chemistry 11
The Chemistry 11 course has many subjects, such as organic chemistry, valence electrons, and chemical bondings. Chemistry 11 is often considered difficult for high school students because of the introduction to organic chemistry.

Chemistry 12
The Chemistry 12 course focuses on reaction rate, collision theory, titrations, catalysts, Le Chateliers principle, equalibrium constants, and hydrolysis. The Chemistry 12 course sets the main basis for students trying to pursue Chemistry in post-secondary.

AP Chemistry 12
The AP Chemistry 12 course in Palmer focuses on the advanced subjects within Chemistry that are explored further in post-secondary. This course requires a B or above in Chemistry 11, since it is much more advanced.
